A Mexican Aviator Remembered in New Jersey’s Pinebarrens

Link to story

“It’s so quiet and so calm; it gets kinda spooky,” said Carranza’s cousin, Capt. Ismael Carranza, 72, a retired pilot for Continental Airlines who has made several pilgrimages to the site from his home in Grapevine, Texas.

But the scene in Wharton State Forest will be very different Saturday when Ismael Carranza joins Legionnaires from Mount Holly Post 11 of the American Legion for the 78th annual commemoration of the young pilot’s death. The solemn event, held every year on the second Saturday in July, draws about 400 people to New Jersey’s Pine Barrens—a more than 1 million-acre natural preserve with unique history, folklore, flora and fauna. Mexican and U.S. dignitaries, Carranza family members and Latino-Americans have attended over the years.

Guests have been known to weep at the story of Mexico’s “Lone Eagle,” just 22 when he crashed on July 12, 1928, and died. Under orders from his commanding officer, Carranza was attempting to fly home after a much heralded goodwill mission during the early days of aviation in the United States.

  1. Arturo W Carranza:

Unfortunately the course Nephew (Ismael Carranza) has nothing to do with the genealogy of the Carranza Family (Venustiano Carranza, Sebastian Carranza, Emilio Carranza, Jose Carranza, in different generations, to be more clear his genetic have nothing to do with Emilio Carranza but they took advantage of the same name for their personal interests.
In the book Cuatrocienegas: Prints for writing history Amador Pena Chavez 2009 University Pedagojica (UPN)Monclova Coahuila Monclova, Coahuila National Unity has great information about Carranza Family on the real and not those who pretend to be someone of whom are Relationship No one.

The military ceremony organized by the secretary of national defense in mexico, which annually takes place in the “Rotonda of Illustrious Persons” in the Pantheon of Dolores, the chronology of the representative of the Carranza Family was: Sebastián Rodríguez Carranza, brother of Emilio, which flew several times with him and he had the accident in Oklahoma.
On his death the representative was Jose Carranza Rodríguez Captain of the 2nd Aviator Mechanical Mexico Air Force (my grandfather) and at the death was succeed by Emilio Carranza Castellanos this carnal nephew of Emilio Carranza Rodriguez.

Sebastián Carranza and Maria Cepeda Gómez Rodríguez my great-grandfather and great grandmother respectively, had 6 children:
Jose (my grandfather) Emilio (the hero), Sebastian, Guadalupe, Marietta and Estela.
Ismael is not part of this genealogy,

  3. American Legion Post 11 Chairman -Captain Emilio Carranza Memorial Committee:

As Chairman of Post 11 Captain Emilio Carranza Memorrial Committee, I do not know what planet Arturo W Carranza is from?

Ismael Carranza is the Second Cousin to Captain Emilio Carranza which was verified by Emilio’s Sister in 2001. Captain Ismael Carranza (retired) himself was awarded the Emilio Carranza Medal by the Mexican Government for organizing efforts for the Mexico City Earthquake.

Captain Ismael Carranza also attends the private military service in Mexico because he is a family member of Emilio.

  5. Irma Carranza Salazar:

  6. Scott Kirwin:

    English translation from last comment:
As in all families, it often happens that there are always some people whose stupid and ignorant they are complex acts that are rolled against each other.
The downside is, that hurt the nobility of the rest of the family and the sacred name of our ancestors and worse, their own brothers and blood relatives.
But “are the little black rice” as my paternal grandfather Carranza with whom I spent my childhood. He forgave everything. We must beware of pride, because the ridiculous not only offends others but against that must be reversed so that just as a goat in glassware. Break it all! and the worst just cut …
EFFECTIVE: As far as I know: there is no Jose among the children of Colonel. Jesus Carranza Neira. Jesus Carranza José Neira and his brother were the only 2 men brothers, sons of Rafael Ramon Carranza, who in turn was only son of Jose Maria Cardenas Carranza founder of “Cuatro de Carranza” in 1790.
The one who was very prolific was Colonel Jesus Maria Neira Carranza was also the President’s right arm Juárezsalvo died at Mariano Escobedo and was also the father of 15 children between them, the First Constitutional President of Mexico, Venustiano Carranza.
His father, Colonel Carranza had only 5 children Neira men and ten women (I omit their names but they were mothers of many heroes and martyrs)
The five men were Pascual, Sebastian, Emilio, Venustiano and Jesus the smallest. Pascual’s largest married in Chihuahua (is the family of Cesar Carranza Carranza)
Sebastian Carranza Garza was elder brother of Don Venustiano and the second of 5 children and men of Colonel, then who hand.
SEBASTIAN Why was the grandfather of Emilio Carranza Rodriguez (our hero) Cepeda his son Sebastian Carranza Carranza was the father of Sebastian Rodriguez and his only brother Captain Emilio Carranza (Mexico Sebastian was Founder and Technical Maintenance of the fleet of American Airlines aera ) Both Carranza brothers were devoted to aviation Carranza had a sister Estela Rodriguez, the first Mexican pilot and instructor in Laredo Texas School of Captain Herrera … (with She learned to fly) They had a half sister Emilia Perez Carranza eminent actress Master of Dramatic Art.
Gen. Jesus Carranza was the brother of Don Venustiano smallest of the 15 children of Colonel Jesus was the martyr of the revolution that strong noble man kind, a man off the charts. He was assassinated in 1914 with his staff in San Geronimo Veracruz (now the name of Jesus Carranza City) as he toured the country unarmed, licensing and paying their holdings to the Federal Army of Victoriano Huerta (“the Jackal” the evil enemy who killed the President Madero fled and now leaving her unprotected soldiers, yes, boys cam, now abandoned by the very ruthless criminal) were caught in an ambush by one nephew of Porfirio Diaz Felix his buddy and killed Gen. Jesus Carranza , his staff and 2 of his sons and nephews who traveled unarmed were killed in cold blood and machetes.
Well, that noble man, all goodness and love of humanity, that idealistic father exemplary, fair and courageous Mexican was always in command of his elder brother Venustiano, ready to die for their country … That great man is the grandfather of Ishmael That … Big Brother Sebastian’s grandfather Emilio and the big brother of the President of Mexico … is the grandfather of Ishmael, direct Primo Emilio Carranza.

  7. Rodrigo:

Let’s look at the statements of Arturo Carranza and Irma Carranza Salazar. If you read them closely, it is clear that they do not conflict. Rather, Arturo Carranza correctly identifies the closest living desendants of Emilio Carranza while Irma’s statement indicates that Mel Carranza is a distant cousin far removed from the aviator Emilio Carranza.

I am reviewing Ms. Carranza Salazar’s statement in Spanish, not the English translation.

First, President Venustiano Carranza de Garza had fourteen brothers and siaters. According to an article about the descendants of Jesus Carranza Neira on Wikipedia in Spanish, the children were born over a span of 28 years.

According to Irma Carranza, Mel Carranza is the grandson of Gen. Jesus Carranza de Garza, the youngest of President Carranza’s brothers and sisters. Gen. Jesus Carranza and members of his staff, including a son and nephew, were captured and killed by an opposing general during the Mexican Revolution after President Madero’s overthrow and assasination.

According to both statements, Emilio Carranza was the grandson of Sebastian Carranza de Garza, whom appears to have been President Carranza de Garza’s second-oldest brother. Because the men’s sisters are not identified it is not possible to ascertain from their statements the difference in age between Sebastian and Jesus. However, articles on Wikipedia in Spanish indicate that Jesus was born in 1863 and Sebastian in 1852, a decade of difference.

The aviator Emilio Carranza had two brothers, Sebastian and Jose, information that is repeated by other sources. According to Arturo Carranza, Ing. Emilio Carranza Castellanos and himself are descended from brothers of Emilio, with Emilio Carranza Castellanos a nephew of Emilio Carranza Rodriguez and Arturo Carranza a great-nephew of the aviator. On the other hand, Mel Carranza is a distant cousin through siblings born a decade apart and two generations before the aviator Emilio, whom through the President and his siblings must have as non-lineal descendants a large number of distant cousins.

According to the Jesus Carranza Neira entry on Wikipedia, President Carranza was married twice and had seven children as well as more than 30 nieces and nephews. If each niece and nephew had on average only two children live to adulthood, the aviator Emilio would have had 60 cousins. In the next generation, there would be at least 120 cousins.

  8. Rodrigo:

One further note: There is a source written in the mid-1950s that appears to be reliable. It has information about the development of the Carranza Memorial and Carranza Park and the Post 11 ceremonies in the 1950s, which clearly comes from primary sources obtained from the State of New Jersey or Post 11. This source indicates that Emilio Carranza’s brother Jose Carranza Rodriguez, whom worked in civilian aviation in Mexico, attended the Post 11 Memorial in the 1950s and that Emilio’s uncle Alberto Salinas Carranza, Mexican aviation pioneer and one-time head of the Mexican Air Force, spoke at a Post 11 Memorial in the 1950s. As I understand it, Jose Carranza Rodriguez is the grandfather of Arturo. It seems that at one time Post 11 had ties to the brothers and sisters of Emilio Carranza. As the Centennial of the aviator’s crash approaches, it seems appropriate for area residents to reach out and establish a relationship with his nephew and grand-nephew again.
