Bloggers Do It Better
The News Journal interviewed me for a story on outsourcing in the area. I exchanged several emails and spoke at length to the reporter about my experiences and thoughts on the subject. Here is what the reporter wrote:
By working for major international clients, foreign contractors have developed the expertise to compete, said Scott Shirwin, president of the advocacy group Information Technology Professionals Association of America. The contract lifestyle
Shirwin, 38, of Wilmington was a contractor for JPMorgan Chase. He lost his job after the company switched its contract to Lenovo, an India-based outsourcing firm. Shirwin said the workers, many of whom were working in the United States on a special visa, were paid less than he was.
Shirwin? Shirwin? At least she got the name of the ITPAA right.
JPMC didn’t “switch(ed) its contract to Lenovo” – a Chinese firm; JPMC has thousands of contracts with vendors. It hired Cognizant Technology Solutions, and made them hire me directly for a project. When the project went overbudget, they laid me off to cut costs.
The “special visa” was actually two visas: the H-1b and L-1. The H-1b earned about half of what I made, and the L-1 didn’t even make minimum wage. Yes they “were paid less than” I was – significantly less.
Sloppy writing for a paper that nobody reads. Bloggers write – and fact-check – so much better.
