The Kid and a Horror Novel

The Kid is sitting on the couch reading a horror novel that he picked today at the book fair at his school. The laptop lays on the floor, and the TV is on but ignored.  As the child of two parents who both read voraciously seeing him on the couch with his head down behind a book reassures me that I must be doing something right.

When I was a kid myself I always thought that I would be a natural at parenthood. I regularly babysat for my nieces and nephews and enjoyed minding them when my sisters needed a break. Of course babysitting is one thing; taking care of a child 7/24/365 is another. My experience with my nieces and nephews has not helped with parenting at all.

I’ve never worked so hard in my life, but on nights like tonight when he’s brought home a solid report card and he’s scaring himself with his horror novel (his foot touching my side just for reassurance) it’s worth it.
