What if Bush is right?

    Let’s all agree: Islamic fanaticism and the cult of jihad and martyrdom is a moral evil and a threat to us, and to the world at large, and we should fight it with all available resources.

    Now let’s talk about Bush. Let’s acknowledge his clear language about the threat of Islamic terrorism, and his articulation of the need for a strong sense of purpose and resolve to fight it.

    What I hold against Bush, strongly, is that he has pimped the threat of terror for his own political advantage at every opportunity, while failing to do the things that will actually make us safer. This administration is responsible for a list of screwups a mile long, and they add to that list every day. Most recent example: giving up the name of an Al-Qaeda mole, so ending the active intelligence investigations he was involved in.

    I *do not* consider the invasion of Iraq a constructive step in fighting terrorism. Quite the contrary. I *do* believe that Bush and his cohort deliberately sought to distort the intelligence available to them in order to justify a war that they sought for reasons having nothing to do with terrorism or any realistic threat to the US.

    What is evident to me is that Bush is a screwup whose first and last consideration in everything he does is where his political advantage lies. I believe he is in far, far over his head, in a situation where he does not have the tools to effectively deal with the issues that are on his plate. As a consequence, he relies on the advice of a cabinet whose well-known, publicly stated agenda is a (hopefully) benign form of world domination. It’s a bad situation.

    What if Bush is right? When he says Islamic fanaticism and the cult of jihad is evil, yes, he’s right. I give him credit for that, while also noting that he is joined in that opinion by millions.

    My question is: what if Bush is exactly the dumbass, know-nothing, shallow, fuckup that he plays on TV? If this is a time that calls for a Lincoln, can we afford to let a Bush stay in office?
