I submit that the efficacy of the Dutch vessels is not the entire issue. May I point out that the Jones Act requires that vessels be US-flagged to work these waters? I’m not advocating that the Jones Act be repealed in its entirety – it is an enormously complicated piece of law which contains, among other things, the equivalent of Workman’s Compensation for mariners – but a temporary suspension of the requirements of the Jones Act for vessels specifically designed for and participating in spill remediation seems to be in order. In fact, John McCain has introduced legislation to that end, since apparently the brain freeze has prevented a simple executive order…
